Supporting Canada’s Economy at Pemberton Valley Supermarket
If you have decided to do your part to help stand up for Canadians through your purchasing decisions, you've encountered a sea of confusion surrounding how to choose the right products that support your initiative. A trip to the supermarket can leave you scratching your head.
Is it enough to choose products from companies owned by Canadians? Is brand recognition going to be enough information for educated purchases? With nearly all products on the shelf citing a Canadian address, some Canadian content, or even state they are a proudly Canadian company - which products are actually made right here in Canada?
There are plenty of things to consider and unfortunately no simple answer, which is why the experience is so confusing. All of the products you see on the shelf took a journey that touched some part of the Canadian economy along the way. Canadian owned, Canadian content, Canadian distributor, Canadian importer, packaged in Canada… This and many more factors in the process have impacted Canadians before it reached the shelf at the supermarket.
The Pemberton Valley Supermarket is a locally owned independent business and as such, all purchases support the LOCAL economy. We are committed to providing our customers with a selection of quality products and will always support local farmers and local products.
Our customers have been asking for guidance to help “buy Canadian”, so we are answering the bell.
Independent grocers cannot verify what is Canadian and what is not. We leave that to governments and as such, we recognize the established regulatory definitions of what constitutes ‘Made in Canada’ and ‘Product of Canada’ products:
• Product of Canada: Requires a higher percentage of Canadian Content. Has to have at least 98% of the costs of production or manufacturing to be Canadian. Including ingredients and processing.
• Made in Canada: Requires at least 51% of the costs of production or manufacturing to be Canadian. This includes the final processing. But the ingredients may be imported.
To assist with identifying these items, you will notice some red and blue stars on the shelf labels. This is still a work in progress.
RED stars indicate a product Made in Canada or a Product of Canada.
BLUE stars indicate a product of USA.
